About DBE Arizona

Our History

The Daughters of the British Empire is a distinguished organization with deep roots in preserving British heritage and supporting charitable causes. Founded nationally in 1909, the DBE has grown into a network of chapters across the United States, each dedicated to maintaining the traditions and values of the British Commonwealth while serving their local communities.

The Arizona State Society was established in 1939, bringing together women of British and Commonwealth heritage in the Grand Canyon State. Over the decades, we have grown from a small gathering to seven thriving chapters, each with its own unique character and commitment to our shared mission.

Throughout our history, DBE Arizona has been a steadfast supporter of The British Home in California and numerous local charities. Our members have organized countless fundraisers, social events, and cultural celebrations, creating a lasting legacy of service and friendship.

The Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) was founded in 1909 by the visionary Mrs. Sarah Josephine Meredith Langstaff. Inspired by a desire to unite women of British and Commonwealth heritage residing in the United States, she established the society to foster fellowship and philanthropic service. Her enduring legacy is defined by the society's motto, "Not Ourselves, but the Cause," and her commitment to supporting the elderly—a mission of compassion that continues to guide our Arizona chapter today.

Our Mission

The Daughters of the British Empire in Arizona is committed to three core pillars that guide everything we do:

Preserving British Heritage

We celebrate and maintain the rich traditions, customs, and values of Britain and the Commonwealth. Through cultural events, celebrations, and social gatherings, we keep our heritage alive for current and future generations.

Supporting Charitable Causes

Philanthropy is at the heart of our organization. We actively raise funds and support The British Home and various Arizona charities, making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

Building Lasting Friendships

We provide a welcoming community where women of British and Commonwealth heritage can connect, share experiences, and forge lifelong friendships. Our social events and regular meetings create bonds that extend beyond our gatherings.

Our Philanthropic Work

The British Home

Our primary charitable focus is The British Home in Sierra Madre, California, a residential care facility providing compassionate support for elderly members of the British and Commonwealth community. Since our founding, we have been dedicated supporters of this vital institution.

Through annual fundraisers, galas, and community events, DBE Arizona chapters contribute significantly to The British Home's mission of providing quality care, dignity, and comfort to its residents.

Arizona Community Support

In addition to our flagship support of The British Home, our chapters actively contribute to various local Arizona charities and causes. Each chapter selects community organizations that align with our values of service and compassion, supporting initiatives in areas such as:

  • Senior care and support services
  • Veterans assistance programs
  • Children's education and welfare
  • Healthcare initiatives
  • Community development projects

Through the collective efforts of our members, we make a meaningful impact on both our heritage community and our Arizona neighbors, embodying the spirit of service that defines the Daughters of the British Empire.
